You’re not alone… look at this: https://www.facebook.com/neutroncode/posts/126476879755838
And this guy is a really good programmer, Neutron is hands down the best, most advanced audio player for mobile devices.Al exKeymasterNice one, thank you very much! 😀👍
Al exKeymasterThe Win95 OSR version is important, I belelieve. Not all of them will work equally well in Dosbox. Even if it’s working, it’s still very buggy (mostly Win95 bugs though 😁).
Al exKeymasterI’m currently on vacation, so I’m not able to do more in-depth testing (that’ll have to wait til monday 😉), but to give an example, these are my Diablo 2 mounting commands (Win95 on a 512MB C drive, Diablo II on a 2GB D drive):
imgmount c /storage/0000-0000/Games/PC/Win95/c.img -t hdd -fs fat -size 512,63,32,520
imgmount d /storage/0000-0000/Games/PC/Win95/2GB_Diablo2.img -t hdd -fs fat -size 512,63,64,1023
boot -l cAl exKeymasterIirc, you can extract all files from the iso archives with 7zip, and copy them to an .img file with UltraISO (in a Windows PC).
Al exKeymasterOMG, I’m sorry, I completey messed that one up. For some reason, I tested ROA 3 – Shadows over Riva. Too many things on my mind I guess, those two games aren’t even remotely related to each other. 🙈
Yes, for point&click adventure games, ScummVM is better suited than Dosbox. Even though you can create much better custom control layouts in Magic Dosbox, there can be all sorts of hiccups during emulation (mouse, cd emulation, sound etc). And because ScummVM isn’t an emulator, it can much better circumvent these things.Al exKeymasterI’ve just tested mine, everything’s fine. Two things you might want to try:
1. if you keep the game on external storage, make sure you’ve requested write access for Magic Dosbox from within the app’s general settings.
2. check the sound settings, because by default, DOSBox uses IRQ7, whereas real hardware back then used IRQ5. At least my SBPro and SB16 back then, only the og Soundblaster was on IRQ7. Therefore, games with preconfigured settings might not have working sound right away.Al exKeymasterStrange, should be working exactly like before. Are you using the same profile? Maybe check your soundcard settings in your Kyrandia install.
Al exKeymasterYep, that’s possible. Just save your profile with the save icon in the left bottom corner of the edit menu before you quit.
Al exKeymasterThat’s most likely an Android and/or Chromebook issue. The “Y” and “Z” characters will be swapped correctly in Dosbox (“Y” on the virtual keyboard will enter a “Z” character), but obviously, the swapping doesn’t translate well to your Chromebook’s keyboard.
You can remap these keys with Magic Dosbox’s built-in mapper tool though.
1. First, use Magic Dosbox’s onscreen keyboard to identify which key responds to which special character (for example “[” will type “ü”). Write these down somewhere.
2. Next, open Voodoo Control in Magic Dosbox. Tick the “Enabled” box below the “Mapper” heading.
3. Now comes the fun part. Tap “Gamepad Buttons” under “Joystick” (even though you’re not using a gamepad). Press the “+” icon.
4. Now, press the “ü” key on your Chromebook’s keyboard. In my case, it registers as a second “u” character (don’t ask me why ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
5. Tap the “none” button to configure it, then “Key”, and select the “[” key from the list.
6. Confirm two times to get back to Dosbox.Repeat that for every key that needs remapping. I’ve also recorded a little video of the mapping process: https://www.mediafire.com/file/20d5uup9vy929hg/MagicDosbox_key_remapping.mp4/file
Al exKeymasterI’m a bit confused. 😇 Which config file do you mean? Expert settings are the equivalent to the dosbox.conf file, and any changes made there should override all other settings. No other config is needed in that case.
Al exKeymasterAll Mediafire links are working for me. Maybe a temporary downtime?
Al exKeymasterAw, sweet memories. 😍
That sense of sheer loniness in this game was absolutely unique back then, and it still works today. I have to get back into UW soon.
Al exKeymasterHaha yes, they didn’t care much about smooth controls back then. But once you’ve gotten used to it, Ultima Underworld is actually very playable. Although I’m using a dpad (mapped to WSAD), I also have an extra “Walk” button (mapped to s) on the right side of the screen. This way, I can walk with the right thumb, and steer left/right with the left thumb. That’s much more convenient and precise. I only use dpad up (w) when I really need to run, e.g. when I want to take a long jump.
It might even be a good idea to have walk and run on the right, and only turn left/rifgh and strafe left/right on the left side of the screen.
Al exKeymasterWhat, the pixel trap incompatibility? Never mind, I’m probably the only person affected by this, and I’ve repaired all of my layouts now. If it’s about zip files, you can check it out when you find the time, of course. 😉
