Tutorials

Welcome to the tutorials section.

Magic DosBox emulates a very old platform called MS-DOS. It’s a command line operating system and was introduced before Windows OS.  DOS was here for a long time and was a point of interest for many game developers. Now, almost twenty years after, there are a lot of fans who want to play these oldies(including me). What’s more, there are young people who want to play them. Unfortunately, DOS was not as user friendly as current applications. There isn’t some magic button that reads your thoughts and sets up your game. Fortunately Magic Dosbox solves a lot of these “unfriendly” steps. But it is good to know basics. So I prepared these tutorials.

Tutorials

  • Dosbox basics – (coming soon)
  • Widgets guide – DOS games were almost exclusively keyboard controlled, with mouse support later on. But it’s crazy to take a keyboard with you or hack up some mouse connection to your android device. So I prepared collection of widgets which allow you to edit screen layouts that can compensate for the lack of physical input devices. For example you can create your own layout for a custom keyboard.
  • Swipes – swipes are special gestures on touch devices. You can swing with your finger over the screen. Android can detect this action and inform Magic Dbox. Magic Dosbox can translate these gestures and you can map many custom actions to them. This tutorial explains how to show your keyboard with a simple swipe.
  • Real time strategy – here I explain how to setup screen scrolling in Command and Conquer 1, Warcraft 2 and similar games.
